Hope Center For Youth Boys & Girls Wilderness Camps Texas
HopeCenterForYouth.com was created on 05/20/2008, FOR YOU!

Hi Folks, This is Terry D. and I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you former Hope Center For Youth Counselors & Campers and also to those of you that  were involved with the Hope Center School in Houston, TX. This website is dedicated to all of you that had the good fortune to experience all that Hope Center For Youth had to offer us. Some of us had better experiences then others but we all made friends and grew from those experiences.

Whether your experience was as a counselor, teacher or camper from the boy's camp or girl's camps out in Apple Springs Texas or at the Hope Center Four Youth School in Houston I'm glad that you took the time to search for and found this website. I created it for you. I hope it brings back some fond memories for you.

If you have old picture you would like to share with others that find this site let me know.... terry@hopecenterforyouth.com

One of the places the Rangers stopped at while on our river trip down the Rio Grand River in 1979 was called "Bud and Pansies" in Langtry.
Peter Wood visited Bud and Pansies in 1992  and reports it's now called "Bud's Place".
Pete say's they still have a picture on the wall of the Rangers when we stopped there on Halloween day in 1979.

Some of the other guys that I met were Larry Nunamaker or Nuttamaker, Richard Jones of Mesquite, Texas or Richardson, Texas, Rudy Gauerterez, Anthony Hopkins of Houston, Texas, Robert E Nichols, Joe or Joseph Conley and his dog Alcatraz, Larry Griffin (Teacher Larry), Herald Facto, Freddy from Holland, Chief Phil the Guitar player who loved to Jam for Jesus!
Camp Group Names:
Boys Camp: Tonkawa, Woodsmen, Rangers & the Eagles

Girls Camp: Sequoias the youngest , Shoshones (13-14 yr olds),  Weushis and Auroras (both 15 & up).
The Auroras later became known as the Agapes. -
Thanks Traci Williamson for the refresher!
The camps were located in Apple Springs Texas (Boys) and Groveton Texas (Girls)

Camp had as much of an impact on me in becoming a better person than any camper. The things I learned from the campers I use daily. I am still working with youth. I am an Elementary Principal. I try to teach my teachers and students the kinds of things we experienced at camp. I am absolutely thrilled that someone has created this site and that people respond. I know that more would if we knew how to get ahold of them.

I am going to send this to Dr. Rudy Alexander who was a counselo, counselor supervisor, asst director, case worker at Hope Center and who has been an insipration to me and many others. I have also sent this to Graden Keller who is a very successful consultant who uses the skills promoted at camp even today. I found out about this site from Phil Reed who I have tried often to emulate and has inspired me to be better.

Hello from the former Hope Center GWC Service Manager. I have some fond memories and even some scars from years of traveling that long road to work every day. Somewhere I have some good pictures of the camp just after it closed in 2001. I'll try and dig them up and send a few in.

Hope Center helped me to appreciate things and helped changed my way of thinking"Positive" and if I hadn't gone something bad would of probably happened to me or ended up dead..And Mr.Peter I remember the counselors the other girls and the canoe trips and I even kept in touch with a few of the girls that were there with me , I was 13yrs old when I was there I am 38yrs old now ,,,I wish my memory was that good that I could remember the name of the group too, haha

Letha - is your mom a Mom? Karla (wifeof Jeff)? Patrice? The lady who worked in the office (I think her name was Luann)? I can't think of anyone else who could have worked there for soooo long. I'll bet the stories she told you were incredible. Take care!

I was an Agape counselor at Girls Camp from 84-86. Even after 20 years, I still have amazingly vivid memories of the girls (now women!) and things that happened. I wonder "what-ever-happened to" these folks: Donja, Cheryl, Shronda, Melouise, Yvette, Aileen, Sharon, Tammy, Margaret, Saber, Kathleen...I hope I did some good for y'all, or at least did no harm. I made many mistakes that I still regret, but I also remember the fun we had. Like a trauma that made me strong, I'll always remember GWC.

Judge Eric Andell of Houston, Texas (TX) was a lawyer back when he got me enrolled into Hope Center For Youth instead of Going to a State Juvenal Jail for minors. Personally, I'm glad he did. Hope Center Wilderness Camp taught me a lot of lessons that are still with me today. Now he's one of the Big Guys! Way to go Eric! (Link) Oh, and Thanks!!! Oh, just found this (Ouch!) Oh well, we all make mistakes!
